Weed Control
Weed control in any garden is vital. They
look untidy, steal water and nutrients and can become so
overgrown they choke plants.
Once you have the weeds in your garden under
control you should not need to dedicate much time to weeding.
Weeding Methods
Hand weeding - This is the quickest way to
get rid of weeds. Pull them up and throw them into a black
bag for rubbish disposal. Don't put them on a compost heap
as you will be feeding them.
Digging - Dig out weed roots to stop them
coming back.
Weed killers - These are effective but be
wary of those that linger in the soil. Weed killers are
non selective and will kill your plants too so use them
sparingly.
Loose Mulches - Mulching with compost, manure
or chippings keeps down persistent weeds.
Sheet Mulches - Black plastic or old carpet
are invaluable for clearing large areas. You can use black
plastic and cut holes for your plants and then cover the
plastic with bark. This creates a nice effect and will ensure
there are no weeds.
Plants - Plant densely and give the weeds
no room to grow. Once the plants are growing well weeds
won't get any light and will stop growing.
