The Best Bulbs
The best bulbs are easy to grow and produce
fantastic results. Here they are:
Anemone Blanda - These are low growing
and need no special care. The Starry flowers of blue, pink
or white open when sun shines, so it would be unwise to
plant them in a shady spot. Use them in bed, borders, or
even in the lawn, where they will naturalise quite easily.
Bluebell - These lovely wild flowers
increase in number with great enthusiasm and are best used
in wilder parts of the garden where they can spread freely.
They prefer a moist soil but in fact will grow almost anywhere
in sun or shade. Buy the bulbs early and plant immediately.
Crocus - One of the earliest bright
flowers of the year. They can be planted in any sunny well
drained spot but look their absolute best when naturalised
in the lawn.
Daffodil - The most welcome of spring
flowers giving the first really bold splash of colour of
the year from as early as February. The range is enormous
with varieties suitable for window boxes, pots, beds, borders
and even naturalising in grass and under trees.
Hyacinth - They have a delicious perfume
and are good for growing indoors. They can also be used
for creating strong blocks of colour in the garden. After
the first year the flowers gradually become more bluebell
like and can be transplanted for naturalising elsewhere
in the garden.
Iris - The early flowering irises appear
in February and can make a real impact. Give them a sunny
position in light free-draining soil.
Lily - This is the queen of all bulbs
and they are not difficult to grow. They must have rich
well drained soil, but they are perfect for pots, with good
compost and protection from slugs they will be magnificent.
Tulip - If you pick your varieties
well with this flower you will have a succession of flowers
for a full three months. Tulips need a free draining soil
and a sunny south facing position where they can enjoy the
sun.
