Rooftop Garden

The key to a successful rooftop garden is to have lots of hardy and low maintenance potted plants. You can make a roof terrace feel like a real garden with lot of greenery and big plants.

With a roof garden you don't want to have to spend too much time watering your plants or dead heading and you also want the roof space to feel more like an open garden especially if you are surrounded by other buildings.

The first thing to do when setting up your garden space is to think about screening. Are there a lot of building, vents, roof windows that you would rather shield from view? You can use screening plants like bamboo or reed fencing to make your garden more private.

Your roof top doesn't have any soil to plant in so bring in some big pots and plant some big hardy plants that won't take much looking after. Position them in corners and in strategic positions that catch the eye when you look out onto your roof terrace and it will soon start to feel more like a garden.

You could add a water feature. Some water features are self contained, that is they don't need a pond or water running to them you just add water to the ready made water feature and plug it in. This will help distract from any noise you can hear from your roof garden as well as create a nice focal point.
