Lawn Care
|
Most gardeners wish for a perfect lawn but are not
sure what lawn care is needed to create one.
To start off with you need to decide whether to use
Turf or seed. Turf gives almost instant results but
is relatively expensive and heavy work. Seed is much
cheaper, easier to use on irregular shaped lawns and
far lighter work. Seed takes three or four months
to establish and needs careful looking after unlike
turf.
The key to a good lawn is to prepare the ground well.
It is time consuming and heavy work but your lawn
will fair better in the long run.

First clear the ground of all weeds or existing grass.
Apply a weed killer to help.
Dig over the area and add lots of organic matter
like well rotted horse manure. If the soil is very
dense rake in some gravel to improve drainage.
Rake the area level and remove any large stones.
Firm the ground down by walking over every inch of
it.
Finally rake in a fertilizer a couple of days before
you seed or turf.

If sowing a seed split the garden into sections
and measure out the seed for each section. Sow the seed
by scattering it evenly over the ground and then rake into
the soil. Water thoroughly.
Turf should be laid immediately while its
still fresh. Lay the turf in rows offsetting each row so
you end up with a brick like pattern. Overlap each piece
slightly so you don't end up with any gaps. Trim the edges
to shape. Keep the turf well watered and don't walk on it
for about a month except when mowing.
