Flower garden and weeds - Keeping your flower garden
free from weeds can be a bit of a chore.
Weeds fall into two categories annual nuisances and perennial
pests. Annual weeds are shallow rooted and rely on the
quick production of masses of seed to keep the family
going and some can raise several generations in a year.
Perennial weeds are a more diverse group, with several
nasty tricks up their sleeves. Some form a deep taproot
which clings tenaciously and if the top of the root is
snapped off the remainder will usually resprout. Other
perennials such as brambles increase from running stems
which root where they touch the ground and a variation
on this is those like ground elder which send up stems
from creeping roots.
To keep the weeds out of your flower garden Hand weed
regularly and plant your flowers close together using
a good proportion of ground cover plants. Once they are
growing well weeds are deprived of light and will give
up the struggle.
Weed Killers and highly effective but they are non-selective
and will kill your flowers too. Tumbleweed gel is a good
option, you can put it directly on the weeds taking care
not to get any on your surrounding flowers. If you are
just starting your flower garden you can use a non persistent
weed killer in a spray before you start planting your
flowers to kill any existing weeds off.
Ground mulches are handy is you are not planting densely.
Most perennial weeds will be completely smothered out
in one growing season. They are not really practical if
you are going to be planting a lot of flowers.
