Container Planting

Container planting is perfect for any type of garden and is very versatile. Nearly anything can be grown in containers and virtually anything can be used as a container, you don't have to stick with the conventional terra-cotta pots and wooden barrels.

You are making the most of all available space and brightening up your garden at the same time.

Container plants do need a little more care than those in the bare ground but it does mean you can change your garden around if the mood takes you.

It is really important to use good compost. Resist the temptation to save money by using garden soil, its not the right consistency for container gardening.

Peat based composts are ideal for bedding plants, vegetables or anything that's being planted for just a few months. Growbag compost is the cheapest option.

Whatever container you use it is essential that its well drained. Make sure there are drainage holes and add drainage material to the base of the container. This will prevent the compost running away and blocking the drainage holes.

Planting

After adding drainage material fill with compost to within 2.5cm or so of the rim of the container. Use a hand trowel to dig individual holes for each plant. Gently firm the compost around them. Water thoroughly until you see the excess running out of the bottom of the container.

Feeding

Four or five weeks after planting the fertiliser in the compost will be running out and you will need to add fertiliser.
